While fiberglass pools are not maintenance-free compared to other pool types, they do require the lowest maintenance. Over the course of their lifetimes, vinyl pools will require several liner replacements, and gunite pools will need to be resurfaced every four to six years. Fiberglass pool shells can last a lifetime, but owners will still need to perform regular maintenance to ensure they stay beautiful.
Crystal clear water does not necessarily mean balanced water. Regardless of the type of pool you have, you should test your water chemistry levels regularly, record them at least once a week and adjust as needed to achieve proper water balance. If you have trouble maintaining your water chemistry, you may need to hire a pool maintenance pro to get your water where it needs to be. Once it’s back on track, you may be able to more easily keep it balanced on your own.
While gunite pool maintenance requires steel brushes and plenty of elbow grease, fiberglass pools are quite the opposite. You should never use abrasive cleaners, automatic dish detergent, steel wool, metal scrapers or other rough brushes or tools because they can cause permanent damage to the gel coat finish of the fiberglass pool.
